Why Buy Organic
For me, there are three reasons:
Their objective is to kill and I don’t want them in my food. I don’t want them in my wife’s food. I don’t want them in my kid’s food. Period. So, the only way to avoid them is to choose organic or biodynamic food sources. Or, grow your own without the use of pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. That is what we do at Living Earth Farm.
Here are some excerpts from the 2010 United States President’s Cancer Panel report that might better explain why pesticides, herbicides and fungicides are harmful to you, your children, and the environment:
“Leukemia rates are consistently elevated among children who grow up on farms, among children whose parents used pesticides in the home or garden, and among children of pesticide applicators” (page 44).
“In addition, residues of agricultural chemicals are found in fruits, vegetables, grains, and beverages that are made from contaminated plants and water. Meats and dairy products also can be contaminated by the water and feed provided to livestock” (page 45).
An average of 18 new pesticides are introduced every year. EPA standards for registration are primarily risk-benefit based. A pesticide will be registered for use if EPA determines that it does not pose “unreasonable risk to man or the environment, taking into account the economic, social, and environmental costs and benefits of the use of any pesticide.”
